Final Journey – composed for a special lady

Posted in : Inspirational on

Five years have flown by since the passing of my dear mother-in-law. On the day of her passing, I felt inspired to compose an instrumental piece in her honour entitled ‘Final Journey’. This is one of the most moving pieces for me on my piano album ‘Glimmerings’. After hearing of her passing, I felt the best way for me to feel her presence was to sit at the piano and play what spontaneously came to my heart. Those are the moments when something truly miraculous works through you. When one is used as an instrument, something creative flows through. It is an experience that is difficult to describe.
There is symbolism in the piece that I would love to share. ‘Final Journey’ is about the ending of a chapter in her soul’s journey and the beginning of her adventure in the next level of existence. The piece ends with the piano without the cello which symbolises her ascending into the next realm. Finally the piano plays an octave higher which symbolizes her soul dancing in the next existence. The cello stops playing and allows the piano to give a whisper of her existence here and the beginnings of her journey in the realms beyond.
In the weeks before her passing, my mother-in-law used to say that she felt she was on a plane ready to take off and looked forward to reaching her destination. I know she is in a very special place now!
Here is the song, ‘Final Journey’ in honour of dear Ann Mahony Byington.

I blogged about the uniqueness of my mother-in-law 5 years ago.
You can read about it here.

Very beautiful themes and peaceful atmosphere. How about developing the themes a little so that the original is less repetitive? Change keys, make little variations on the themes. You are imaginative enough to do it very successfully! Loving greetings, Sylvia

Absolutely loved it! I could see the whole journey! Much love to your amazing family. Hope to meet up sometime in the third or fourth week of July if you’re in Beijing.
