A Song about Abdu’l-Baha

November 28, 1921 was the passing of a unique Personage by the name of Abdu’l-Baha. On the anniversary of His passing, I am sharing a song called ‘Hold Thou My Hand’ that I recorded recently for a friend who has been dealing with a lot of pain as a result of an illness. I wanted to find a way to ease his suffering and I know that music is a great healer so I recorded the song in his honor and wanted to share it with you also.

The words of this song are from a poem by Dr. Habíb Mu’ayyid and the melody is by Gloria Faizi. The lyrics are below.

Hold Thou My Hand

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, I’m all alone
The road is dark and far from home
Hold thou my hand, Hold thou my hand

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, be Thou my guide
When I am weak stay by my side
Hold thou my hand, Hold thou my hand

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, O dearest Friend
Help me to reach my journey’s end
Hold thou my hand, Hold thou my hand

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, hear me I pray
O help me lest I go astray
Hold thou my hand, Hold thou my hand

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, I shall no fear
When I am sure that Thou art near
Hold thou my hand, Hold thou my hand

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, O dearest Friend
Help me to reach my journey’s end
Hold thou my hand, Hold thou my hand
‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Hold Thou my hand

  1. This is really beautiful! I love how the phrase “hold Thou my hand” echoes the rhythm of His Name perfectly, and the hint of Arabic melody.

  2. Beautiful

  3. Thanks Xixi and Bret. I hadn’t realized Bret that there could be a hint of a Middle Eastern feeling. I was very emotional singing this piece and had to stop a couple of times in order to sing it without tears. I’m glad you both enjoyed it.

  4. اليكاي عزيز
در لحظه اي كه بيشترين تاييد را از ساحت اقدس حضرت عبدالبها ارزومند بودم نواي دل انگيزت و دست هاي مهربان عبدالبها را حامي و مويد خوداحساس كردم
    dear Elika
So beautiful and full of feelling

  5. This song made me close my eyes, open my heart and breathe in deeply. Beautiful

  6. Love it so touching and cried when I heard it. You have an amazing voice for this great song. This is what I need just now. Thank you…How can I buy a copy of it?

  7. Dear Elika,
That was AWESOME! Loved it! I remember listening to ‘Hold Thou My Hand’ as a child way back in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Quick note: I think the lyrics in the first verse ‘I’m all alone’ and ‘far from home’ have been interchanged.

Super hugs to your very dear family and friends. :-)

    Thanks to the inspiring

As I struggled this day I felt that Hold Thou My Hand
also invokes Hold Thou mind. The mind is weak unless divinely assisted from the heart.

  9. Thank you all for your kind comments. I’m so glad you enjoyed the song.
Hi Rana, I’m thinking of making the song available for download soon. Will put up a post about it when it’s available.
Hi Sarmad, you are absolutely right! I have always sung it the way I recorded it but I’m glad that it still makes sense! :)

  10. That was inspiring songs. N voice pls we want to order it

  11. Very beautiful and soulful!

  12. This is such a comforting and beautiful song. It has become my focus each time I go in for a procedure. Each time, before they knock me out, I imagine Abdul Baha in the surgical room, sitting by my side, holding my hand.

It is amazing how music is a healing balm for an ailing soul, an ailing body. It has helped me focus on letting go, being detached, and being a happy and joyful being. While I am not always successful at that, as my lovely and sweetest and devoted wife can attest!, I try my hardest.

Thank you for such a lovely song that I’ll treasure all my life. Thank you to Dr. Habíb Mu’ayyid for the beautiful poem that I’ll treasure all my life.

  13. I neglected my thanks for Gloria Faizi for the melody. Thank you, Gloria Faizi for such a beautiful melody.

  17. Wonderful, wonderful! It touched my heart deeply and makes one feel relaxed abiding to His Will.
